NYC Youth project

During the month of April I started focusing more and more on portraits of young people. Kids with the typical NYC attitude, bravado, cocky confidence and big dreams... Kids with their youthful vulnerability, innocence and curiosity about the world around them... It's always easy to find plenty of them in my favorite photography playground, the Union Square park... All photos were shot and processed with iPhone 4 only. Some of my better ones:

Street photography with Zack Arias

Somehow through Instagram Zack Arias found my photo feed. While visiting NYC on a project we decided to hook up together for a short photo walk through some of my favorite places in downtown Manhattan: Union Square, Lower East Side, Nolita and Soho... Absolutely a great experience talking to one of the best educators and photographers in the biz today... Mount Kailash kora

I went through my old digital color photographs from October 2006 of the Mount Kailash kora in Tibet shot with Olympus E-500. Nice, sharp and crisp photos. But somehow all the fantastic colors and perfect grainlessness couldn't convey what I felt emotionally, spiritually and physically on the Buddhist holy circuit. I re-processed the whole batch in black and white and the images just came to life. The cold ruggedness and stark simplicity of the high altitude surroundings around Mount Kailash now easily came through... But simple B&W conversion just wouldn't do it. I was looking for that...

Four stages of learning

Recently, I saw a Maslow's theory about four levels of competence and how they relate to a mastery of a subject. It also reminded me of Malcolm Gladwell "10,000 hours" meme which says that in order to excel at something you really need to practice it, and by that he means consciously practice it, for at least 10,000 hours. Here they are: Unconscious Incompetence - you don't know that you don't know something Conscious Incompetence - you are now aware that you are incompetent at something Conscious Competence - you develop a skill in that area but have to think about it Unconscious Competence...
