New adventures
I have started plotting my new extended trip: Vagabonding on the Silk Route. I’m still not 100% set on exact route and time frame but tentatively I’m looking at Fall 2008. Flying into Beijing, most likely taking a train to Urumqi, cycling from there into Kazakhstan through Korgaz, then looping through countries of Central Asia: Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan (Samarkand and Bukhara) and Tajikistan (Pamir highway), returning back to Western China and following the Southern route of the Silk Road through Kashgar, Khotan to Lanzhou. From there jumping on a train to Beijing again, enjoy a few days of sightseeing before flying back home…
I have also decided to go with a new Wordpress blog hosted on my own domain. This should make it easier when traveling in China. (To get around periodic blocking of Google domains by Chinese gov’t.) Plus, it looks better and it’s easier to customize, too. So, stay tuned for more to come…

Sounds good!
I believe a rich contribution has been made to Indian language, culture and the arts, by migrants who came here from Central Asia during the middle ages. It should be interesting to follow your adventures there, through your blog.

Hi Rich,
I enjoyed your Mt. Kailash kora photos v. much. I am writing for permission to use one or two of them on the Tibet section of a Web site we are making called, ‘Cultural Profiles of Historic and Modern China.’ We are OneWorld Classrooms, an educational nonprofit based in NY, and the site will is free for all K-12 classes. We would of course credit you and link to your blog if you like — and I can give you a username and password so you can view the site.
We did the kora and have photos we will use — but snow and clouds prevented us from getting a good shot of the mountain itself.
Thanks and best wishes for your upcoming Silk Road Trip!

Hi Rich,
Just to let you know, Wordpress and China don’t go too well unfortunately. You can only access it through a proxy, which doesn’t seem to load up the whole page, making posting pictures tricky. Mind you, that was going through the free blogging space provided by Wordpress, so if you’re not doing that, maybe it will be fine.
(There’s some interesting stuff online about how Wordpress refused to divulge user information to the Chinese Govt, which is why they’re blocked. Which also basically means anyone who isn’t blocked, has)
I very much look forward to reading about your forthcoming travels in Central Asia, my all time favourite travel destination. I hope to be back in China/Tibet in the autumn, though plans for extended travels in South America are brewing…

Just happened to come across another site where your blog of biking through Pakistan was up. I was amazed by your trip and enjoyed reading about it. I am a first-generation Pakistani-American, and I admire how you ventured to such out of the way places. I am also so pleased to read that Pakistanis were so friendly to you. My mother used to summer in Nathiagulli, near Murree.
